Our Location
Situated in the village of Shieldaig, nestled between Torridon and Applecross, the region surrounding Cold Paradise is renowned for its untamed, awe-inspiring landscapes. As opposed to more traditional gallery locations, we must work with wild weather, seasons and tides. Therefore, the gallery is open seasonally June-September, and by appointment.
The Highlands of Scotland provide an ideal setting for artists seeking a direct engagement with the landscape. We seek to underscore the formal and conceptual connections between art and nature by inviting artists and researchers to engage in firsthand research. We hope artists and visitors find inspiration in the wild features of the place, creating a dialogue around entanglement. We believe this discourse is crucial, as is examining our relationships to time and place through the geological and ecological components of a landscape.

"What began as a teenage joke about the weather has become a metaphor for the contrast between the modern world and what remains in this windswept corner:
a paradise...albeit a cold one."

The Project
Cold Paradise was founded by art historian Jamie Morra and artist Magnus Livingstone. We present a seasonal program of exhibitions at our gallery in Shieldaig, and host an Artist Residency in Ardheslaig. Above all, we hope to provide time and space for artists to create in and with nature. Over time, we plan to develop a multidisciplinary space where local people, especially young people, can be exposed to outside influences and approaches.
