Overview
A project inspired by land art, experimental sculpture, and prehistoric structures across Britain...

Cold Paradise was delighted to host Hugo Winder-Lind, our first artist-in-residence. Much of Winder-Lind’s process involves walking and immersion in nature. His fascination with what he terms wilderness-intelligence and cycles of rewilding/urbanisation led to an idea for a series of small shrines or “ancestor houses” made from natural materials that reflect or embody the landscapes they are made in. The “buildings” range from matchbox/shoebox size to crawlspace enclosures like dens or animal dwellings. The shrines contain notes, paintings, and small offerings made from organic materials, thus leaving no mark on the landscape.

His project is inspired by land artists, experimental sculptures made in the studio, and prehistoric structures found across Britain. Although the works are inherently ephemeral, Winder-Lind hopes to create an attitude of pilgrimage surrounding the works, inspiring others to venture out into wild spaces to find them. On-site, the initial idea developed in response to the landscape, the weather, and the physical toil involved in their making.
