Biography
Paintings and works on paper exploring stillness and isolation

Christopher Gee was born in Portsmouth, UK, in 1987. He received his Bachelor's at Camberwell College of Art in 2010 and his Master's in drawing at Wimbledon College of Art in 2012. He currently lives and works on the Thames Estuary. Gee has exhibited in London and the U.S. and has worked with Paul Smith, Liberty London, and Paul Helbers. His work is also held in private collections around the world.

Gee’s small-scale works on paper explore stillness and isolation. His paintings are informed by historic houses and landmarks, often forgotten or overlooked sites of familiarity and intrigue. His graphic yet naive-looking paintings belie the hand of a skilled artist whose references mine the art historical canon. They conjure places both real and imagined, taking us on fragmented journies through forested landscapes, waterways, and vernacular architecture at dusk or under a moonlit sky. The intimacy and execution of these paintings convey themes of silence, solitude, and the wonder of the natural world. His influences include Northern Renaissance painting, Folk Art, the romantic landscapes of Casper David Friedrich, and the paintings of Alfred Wallace. He also takes inspiration from the novels of Herman Hesse and W.G. Sebald.

The series of works below was primarily inspired by a trip from Mull to Skye. Gee documents his travels through photography and journal entries, taking the form of found images, notes, poems, or quotes collected along the way. When he returns to the studio, he works from the photos and his memories to create these small-scale, intimate portraits of specific places that feel eerily familiar, even for those who have never ventured to the sites depicted.
